Glutathione is a small molecule peptide containing three amino acids: glycine, cysteine and glutamic acid. It is an important antioxidant present in the body in the form of both reduced glutathione (GSH) and oxidized glutathione (GSSG).

Antioxidant

Reduced glutathione has a sulfhydryl group in its structure, which is chemically active and susceptible to oxidative dehydrogenation and then binding to free radicals. Glutathione can protect hemoglobin from free radical attack; it can protect hemoglobin from free radical attack and continue to function normally in transporting oxygen; it can protect liver cell membranes and prevent liver damage.

The sulfhydryl group of glutathione is a lively electron-donating group, which binds with exogenous electrophilic carcinogens or drugs, etc., and can also chelate with heavy metal ions directly to form insoluble substances to be excreted from the body. Glutathione has a detoxifying effect on poisoning by acrylonitrile, fluoride, carbon monoxide, heavy metals, and organic solvents.

Liver Protection

Glutathione is an important cofactor in a series of enzymatic reactions in the liver and is involved in the transport of amino acids and bile acid metabolism. In particular, the free sulfhydryl groups contained in reduced glutathione are known as the protective agents of human metabolism.

Clinical studies have indicated that glutathione is an important component of glutathione peroxidase, which, in hepatocytes, participates in lipid peroxidation reactions, inhibits the formation of free radicals, and binds directly to them, so that toxic or potentially toxic substances are converted into water-soluble metabolites in the liver, which are combined with glutathione and excreted from the body.
