What is Ginseng Extract?
Ginseng extract is an extract or concentrated powder obtained from the roots or stems and leaves of Panax ginseng C.A.Meyer. Ginsenoside is one of the main active ingredients, which can be divided into ginsenodiol-type ginsenoside, ginsenotriol-type ginsenoside and oleanolic acid-type ginsenoside according to the different chemical structures of their glycosides; and they are known as Ra (Ra1-6), Rb (Rb1-3), Rf and Rg (Rg1-3), etc., which are more than 20 kinds of monomers, according to the size of the RF value on the thin-layer chromatography. There are more than 20 species of monomers. The six most important monomer saponins are Rg1, Rb1, Rb2, Rb3, Rc, Rd, and Re.

Anti-Inflammatory
Ginseng is one of the most widely used alternative medicines for inflammation. In recent years, it has been found that ginseng extract saponins are more effective in inflammatory related diseases. Ginsenoside GF2 helps in the treatment of inflammatory related skin diseases. Ginsenoside Rg5 improves inflammatory skin diseases such as contact dermatitis or psoriasis.
Hair Care
Liu Li et al. published their research results in the Chinese Journal of Experimental Formulas: Ginseng extract can partially affect the activity of thrombin and inhibit platelet aggregation to promote blood circulation. Park et al. found that ginseng extract could inhibit DKK-1-induced hair follicle degeneration by regulating the expression of Bcl-2 and Bax, thus stimulating the proliferation of keratinocytes in the outer root sheath and reducing hair loss. Ginseng extract protects the scalp and hair follicles from free radical damage, preventing scalp aging and hair follicle atrophy.
Anti-Wrinkle
Ginsenosides can significantly increase the water content of the skin stratum corneum, reduce the value of transdermal water loss, and reduce facial wrinkles. The aqueous and 70% ethanol extracts of freeze-dried ginseng stem and leaves have significant antioxidant and anti-wrinkle effects and can be used as cosmetic food ingredients to improve skin wrinkles. Ginseng activates skin metabolism, reduces keratinisation, moisturises and softens skin as well as reduces wrinkles.
Moisturising
Ginseng extract or infusion contains a variety of saponins and polysaccharides, with excellent penetration, can deeply moisturize the skin, bring thick nourishment, provide the skin with a constant supply of nutrients, quickly regulate the moisture balance of the skin, prevent skin dehydration, and bring a soft and smooth skin texture.
Whitening
Ginseng extracts may exhibit whitening effects by inhibiting tyrosinase; high doses of ginsenosides inhibit the proliferation of B16 melanocytes. Ginsenosides inhibited the expression of nitric oxide synthase in cultured melanocytes. 10-80 g/mL of ginsenoside Rg1 achieved whitening effects by reducing melanin synthesis. Ginsenoside Rg3 had an inhibitory effect on Akt, a signaling molecule that regulates melanogenesis, and extracellular signal-regulated kinases to reduce melanin content and inhibit tyrosinase activity.
Applications:
In Cosmetics:
Ginseng has pharmacological activities in beauty care and skin care. Ginseng extract contains a rich variety of saponin-like components, and the same kind of saponin often has different pharmacological effects, and different kinds of saponins may also have the same medicinal effect. Ginseng extract has been widely developed for its efficacy in skin whitening and skin care. Ginseng extract also has antioxidant and sunscreen effects. Of the more than one hundred ginsenosides known to have been isolated and identified, the higher contents are the major ginsenosides and are abundant. Compared with ginseng extracts, ginsenosides have more comprehensive skincare effects. Major ginsenosides have anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, sunscreen, whitening, and collagen synthesis effects.
For Healthcare Products:
Ginseng extract has anti-hypoxia, anti-fatigue, and anti-aging effects, improves and enhances memory function, has two-way immune regulation, and lowers blood lipids as well as anti-arrhythmia, anti-ischemia, and other effects. It has been used in a variety of health products such as anti-fatigue, anti-aging, and brain health.
