Anti-Inflammatory and Analgesic
Zhang Heng investigated the anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of different doses of hemp leaf nettle extract, which showed good anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects, with effects similar to those of aspirin. The analgesic test of hemp leaf nettle polysaccharide explored by Li Yan showed that hemp leaf nettle polysaccharide had analgesic effect on acetic acid-induced pain in mice, and the analgesic effect was strengthened with the increase of dose. Li Che and Gao Nan also conducted an anti-inflammatory test on the leaf polysaccharide of Urtica dioica, and the results showed that Urtica dioica had significant anti-inflammatory activity.
Enhances Immunity
The polyphenols in nettle extracts have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that enhance the function of the immune system and help increase the body's resistance to disease.
Inhibition of Prostate Hyperplasia
Li Yan used hemp leaf nettle root to carry out the screening study to inhibit the effective site of prostate hyperplasia, and the results showed that the polysaccharide group had a stronger inhibitory effect on prostate hyperplasia. Each dose group had different degrees of inhibition on the dorsal lobe of the prostate, ventral lobe, condenser gland, and total weight of the prostate. These experimental results confirmed that hemp leaf nettle polysaccharide has a significant inhibitory effect on prostate hyperplasia.
Antioxidant
Nettle is rich in antioxidant substances, such as polyphenols, which can effectively scavenge free radicals and protect body cells from oxidative damage, with anti-aging effects.
Hypoglycaemic and Hypolipidemic
Nettle extracts have been reported to have potential hypolipidemic and hypoglycemic effects. Long et al. investigated the hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effects of extracts from the above-ground and below-ground parts of Urtica dioica on tetracycline-induced hyperglycemic mice. The results showed that short-term treatment with ethanolic extract of Urtica dioica in tetracycline-induced diabetic mice had antidiabetic and antioxidant effects and that the effect of low dose Urtica dioica on glucose and lipid metabolism was the most pronounced in diabetic mice.
It was hypothesized that active ingredients might be present in the above-ground part of Urtica dioica. The effect of low doses of Hemp leaf nettle on glycolipid metabolism in diabetic mice was the most pronounced, and the underground part was slightly worse, and it was hypothesized that the active ingredients of hypoglycaemic drugs might be present in the aboveground part.
Hair Loss Prevention
Male testes and female ovaries secrete testosterone, which is catalyzed by the enzyme 5α-reductase and converted to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which causes hair follicles to shrink resulting in hair loss. Beta-sitosterol, found in nettle extract, can inhibit 5α-reductase activity, thus alleviating hair loss.
Applications:
For Health Products:
Nettle extract has antibacterial, antiviral, antitumor, anti-inflammatory, and prostate hyperplasia inhibiting, anti-allergic, immune-enhancing, blood-activating, and other effects. In Europe, nettle is used as a popular drug as a diuretic, astringent, hemostatic, expectorant, and emmenagogue for arthritis, and chronic skin diseases. Nettle preparations are used externally for seborrheic dermatitis, dandruff and to prevent hair loss. In Turkey, local herbalists use nettle herbs in medicine to regulate various pathologies.
In Cosmetics:
Nettle extract has a very moisturizing effect on the skin and improves dry, itchy skin. The antioxidant effect of nettle also slows down skin aging. In addition, the anti-inflammatory effect of nettle has a soothing effect on some skin inflammations. Alcoholic extracts of the nettle plant are also used in hair cosmetics to improve the blood supply and respiration of the scalp, reducing the production of hair grease and dandruff.
