What is Alpha Lipoic Powder?

Lipoic acid, also known as alpha lipoic (α-LA), with the molecular formula C8H14O2S2, is a pale yellow powdery crystal, almost odorless. Solubility in water is small, about 1 g/L (20℃). Soluble in 10% NaOH solution, soluble in aliphatic solvents. Soluble in methanol, ethanol, chloroform, and ether. Lipoic acid has a chiral centre and therefore has both R and S configurations. Natural lipoic acid is a white crystal with only the R configuration, and only the R configuration of lipoic acid can covalently affix to lysine residues through amide bonds to function as a coenzyme. Synthetic lipoic acid, on the other hand, is a mixture of equal proportions of the R and S configurations and is a yellowish powder that is highly soluble in lipid-based solvents.
