Immunomodulation

Polysaccharides are a new endogenous active substance extracted from Ganoderma lucidum, a biological immunomodulator. Its immunomodulatory mechanism may be that Ganoderma lucidum polysaccharides can directly or indirectly activate the immune cells such as T-cells, B-cells, macrophages, natural killer cells, etc., enhance the activity of Deoxyribonucleic Acid Polymerase α, as well as promote the secretion of interleukin-2, etc., and modulate the cellular and humoral immunity functions of the organism. It regulates the cellular and humoral immune functions， it can significantly increase the phagocytosis of phagocytes.

Beneficial for the Prevention and Treatment of Diabetes Mellitus

A study was conducted to observe the efficacy of red reishi mushroom extract in the treatment of 71 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The patients were randomly divided into the Ganoderma lucidum group and placebo group. The Ganoderma lucidum group was given 1800 mg of Ganoderma lucidum extract orally three times a day for 12 weeks. The placebo group took placebo in the same way. Fasting and postprandial glycated haemoglobin, blood glucose, insulin and C-protein were measured in both groups.

The results showed that red reishi mushroom extract significantly reduced glycated haemoglobin from 8.4% before taking the drug to 7.6% at 12 weeks. Changes in fasting and postprandial blood glucose paralleled the changes in glycated haemoglobin, with postprandial blood glucose of 13.6 mmol/L before taking the drug decreasing to 11.8 mmol/L after 12 weeks of taking the drug, whereas the above indexes of the patients in the placebo group were unchanged or slightly increased.

Protection Against Non-ionising Radiation

Red reishi mushroom extract polysaccharides and triterpenoids have anti-ultraviolet radiation effects. Kim et al. used water-soluble polysaccharides isolated from Ganoderma lucidum in an in vitro assay and found that they had similar anti-radiation-induced DNA damage efficacy as the direct Ganoderma lucidum extracts, suggesting that the polysaccharide compounds may be one of the main active components in the anti-radiation function of Ganoderma lucidum.

Protects the Liver

Red reishi mushroom extract, especially the Ganoderma triterpene component, increases the activity of superoxide dismutase and catalase, enzymes involved in the elimination of harmful reactive oxygen species. Ganoderma triterpenes were found to be effective in scavenging free radicals and enhancing the body's ability to resist oxidative stress, thereby reducing liver damage. Studies on the protective effect against alcoholic liver injury in mice found that Ganoderma triterpenes could protect against alcohol-induced liver injury by inhibiting lipid peroxidation, increasing antioxidant enzyme activity, and inhibiting apoptosis and immune-inflammatory responses. In addition, in vitro assays also confirmed that Ganoderma triterpenoids had strong cytoprotective effects against t-BHP-induced oxidative damage in human hepatocellular carcinoma cells HepG2.

Ganoderma lucidum extract polysaccharides can affect the signal transduction of tumour cells, inhibit the nucleic acid and protein synthesis of tumour cells, strengthen the normal cells to resist the erosion of carcinogens, and at the same time inhibit the adhesion movement of tumour cells and the denaturation of tumour blood vessels, promote the differentiation of tumour cells, enhance the body's tolerance to radiotherapy, and promote the secretion of cytokines to activate the complement and so on.
